MY TEACHING LIFE
I have been a primary school teacher for over 20 years. It has been the most rewarding career I could ever have imagined. I feel proud when I think of all the children I have helped over the years.
I have taught children from the Foundation Stage to Year 4 and supported children in all year groups. I have led a range of subject areas from Religious Education, Modern Foreign Languages, Geography and History but my most significant subject lead has been in Maths. I have led this subject for 12 years and supported my school to improve Year 6 SATs results from 14% below the National average to 12% above the National average. This is something I am very proud of.
MY FAMILY LIFE
I have 2 children of my own, who I taught in the classroom, but are almost fully grown now! We have a blended family and I have 2 step-children as well. My family are the most important part of my life and both of my children have used tutors. One is dyslexic and dyscalculia and has always had a tutor through their school life. The other used a tutor for some intensive support in maths to help improve their GCSE Maths result.
WHY DO I TUTOR?
After 20+ years in the classroom and my children all grown up, I was looking for new challenges. Tutoring allows me to take the best bits of teaching and mix it with being my own boss. It gives me the time to spend with each student and gives each student the power to decide on the topic and the pace of learning. These are the elements of teaching that are compromised in large classes with a range of different likes and dislikes and ability levels. Tutoring puts the student in control and their individual needs can be met. As a teacher, nothing could be better!
WHY DO I COACH?
Throughout my teaching career, I have always supported my colleagues with their well being. It gave me enormous pleasure and so, when I left the classroom, I retrained as a life coach and wanted to help as many teachers as I could to have a happy and fulfilling life and career. Teaching is a demanding profession and sometimes we need guidance to ensure it does not take over but supports the life that we want.
